I think that Margaret intentionally killed her husband. In the beginning of the story, it is stated that Margaret used to be a very famous cover girl. It can be inferred that she is out of the business because she has gotten old which causes her to be considered ugly. So from this information you could conclude that she was going to be the type of person that was bitter and always pointing out others flaws to make herself feel better. At the start of the story, Francis is a shown to be a coward but after he hunted and successfully killed the lion he gained a lot of bravery. By Francis gaining this confidence he could have left Margaret. Margaret surely noticed this because she said “You’ve gotten awfully brave, awfully sudden” (pg. 26) Also, the narrator says that “she was very afraid of something” and I think she was scared that he would gain enough confidence to leave her. So to make sure that he doesn’t she wanted to kill him or shoot him in a place that would make him dependent. By making him dependant upon her he wouldn’t leave her.
